A lot of workplace health plans in Canada run on the calendar year. If yours covers massage and runs that way, coverage you haven't used by December 31 usually doesn't carry over, and the full amount starts again on January 1. Here's how to check what you have left and get your visits in before then.

The Short Answer

  • Check your plan's reset date. Many plans reset on January 1, but some run on a plan year that starts on another date.
  • See what you have left in your insurer's app or member website, or ask whoever looks after benefits at work.
  • If your plan needs a doctor's referral, get it before your massage, not after.
  • Weekdays between 10 AM and 3 PM have the most openings. Evenings and weekends are harder to get, so book those further ahead.
  • Holidays have far fewer openings, so try not to leave your last visit to the week of Christmas.

When Does Your Massage Coverage Reset?

Most plans that cover massage set a yearly maximum. On a calendar year plan, it resets on January 1. Other plans run on a plan year that starts on a different date, such as the anniversary of your employer's policy. Your benefits booklet says which, and your insurer's app or member website usually does too.

While you're looking, check:

  • The yearly maximum for massage therapy, and how much of it you've used.
  • Any limit per visit, or the share of each visit the plan pays. Together these decide how many visits your balance covers.
  • Your health spending account, if you have one. Depending on the plan, money left in it may carry over to next year or expire.

What to Sort Out Before You Book

A few things are much easier to fix before your appointment than after it.

  • A referral, if your plan wants one. Most plans don't need a doctor's referral for massage, but some do. The Massage Therapy Association of Manitoba says a referral your plan requires has to be dated on or before the day of your massage, so get it first.
  • A registered massage therapist. Most plans only pay for an RMT who belongs to a recognized professional association. If you're not sure about a therapist, ask the clinic before you book.
  • Direct billing or a receipt. Some clinics bill your plan for you. Otherwise you pay and claim it yourself, so keep the receipt. It should show the date, the therapist's name and credentials, how long the treatment was and what you paid.
  • The claim deadline. Most plans give you a set time to send in claims. If you've paid for massages this year and haven't claimed them yet, check that date too.

When Openings Are Easiest to Find

We count the massage openings Winnipeg clinics offer on AvailableMassages.ca. In the last week of October 2026:

  • An average weekday had about 584 openings. A Saturday had about 275 and a Sunday about 187.
  • 59% of openings started between 10 AM and 3 PM.
  • 14% started at 5 PM or later.

If you can get away for an hour during a weekday, you'll usually have a lot to choose from. If you need an evening or a weekend, book as soon as you see a time that works. The full figures are in When Are Massage Openings Easiest to Find in Winnipeg?

December Dates to Plan Around

Christmas Day (Friday, December 25) is a general holiday in Manitoba. Boxing Day isn't, and this year it falls on a Saturday. If your plan resets on January 1, the last day to use this year's coverage is Thursday, December 31.

Holidays have far fewer openings. On Thanksgiving Monday this year, Winnipeg clinics had 171 massage openings, about a third of a typical weekday. If you have more than one visit left, it's easier to spread them over November and December than to fit them into the last two weeks of the year. Our holiday massage guide covers Christmas Eve to New Year's Day.
